An Isle of Skye Elopement

When a couple from New York first got in touch about eloping in Scotland, I knew it was going to be special. What I did not expect was that it would turn into one of those stories that stays with you long after the photographs are delivered. Their plans brought us to the Isle of Skye. A place that never really behaves the way you expect it to.

Wild Skye

Skye has a personality of its own. Rugged cliffs, restless skies, and weather that can change three times in an hour. On their wedding day the wind rolled in across the hills and the clouds moved low over the landscape. Instead of waiting it out, they embraced it. Hair blowing, coats pulled close, laughing as the rain came and went. They exchanged their vows in a little cosy room nearby, the raging storm brewing outside. Their immediate family watched on. Those are the moments that make elopements here so powerful. Nothing staged. Nothing polished. Just the landscape, weather and two people choosing each other.

More Than a Wedding Day

What started as a photographer and a couple meeting for the first time slowly turned into something more. Over the years I have visited them whenever I have been in New York photographing weddings. Usually somewhere between Brooklyn and Manhattan, catching up on life and talking about how surreal it still feels that our paths crossed on a windy hill in Scotland. It is one of the unexpected things about this job. Sometimes the people you photograph become part of your life long after the day itself.

The Kind of Story Scotland Creates

Elopements in Scotland have a way of turning into adventures. The weather rarely behaves, the landscapes are vast, and the day often unfolds in ways you could never plan. But that is exactly the point. The Isle of Skye gave this couple a wedding day that felt completely their own. Wind, rain, laughter and all. And those are always the stories worth telling.
